A sumptuous Portuguese Baroque brooch, this ring preserves the radiance of a material to which the centuries have accorded a precious, talismanic and spiritual value: rock crystal.
A colourless variety of quartz, rock crystal was used as a talisman from Antiquity onward. From the Middle Ages, it established itself in luxurious productions, sustained by the fascination exerted by its absolute transparency and mineral purity. Its physical clarity then invited a symbolic reading: that of a material traversed by light, and thereby brought into proximity with the divine.
The Greeks saw in its crystalline brilliance the effect of eternal ice, formed by the cold of glaciers and by the gods. The Romans attributed to it a divinatory use. In Islam, its transparency evoked Divine Light; in Christianity, crystal traversed by light became the image of man illumined by the grace of God. In the Middle Ages, alchemists saw in it a material capable of capturing celestial light, to the point that it was at times called the “stone of the wise.”
What once belonged to the realm of talisman and light now rests upon the hand.
