This necklace, created from a Roman coin, preserves the force of its ancient sign.
In Roman iconography, the open hand is never a simple motif. Raised upwards, it may evoke the gesture of oath-taking: that of soldiers proclaiming their unwavering loyalty to the Republic and to its ideals. It commits the word, affirms fidelity, makes a promise kept visible.
This sign also lends itself to a more sacred reading. Before its Christian afterlife, the Manus Dei or Manus Domini — the hand of God — could already suggest a divine hand, dispensing favour and blessing. In this suspended gesture, Rome seems to hold together two powers: that of the human oath and that of the gods’ protection.
What once belonged to the realm of oath, loyalty and blessing now rests upon the skin.
Roma is an Elevation Jewel.
