This necklace preserves the memory of an ancient symbol of power and protection: the sacred crocodile of Pharaonic Egypt.
In Ancient Egypt, a land of myths, rites and divinities, the crocodile held a singular place. Associated with the god Sobek, “Lord of the Nile” and of the marshes, it was considered one of his earthly incarnations. Fed, adorned with jewels in temples, and at times mummified, it belonged to a complex cult in which offerings, ceremonies and royal protection were closely entwined.
A major divinity of the Egyptian pantheon, Sobek is most often represented with the head of a crocodile. Linked to the waters of the Nile, he symbolised fertility, prosperity and the vital energy of the river. Yet he was also a god of military power, invoked to protect armies, ensure victory and safeguard the reign.
Placed under his divine protection, the pharaohs paid homage to him in order to strengthen their authority and secure Egypt’s prosperity. His cult became so powerful that, for the Romans, the very image of the crocodile came to symbolise Egypt itself.
What once belonged to ritual, river and royal power now meets the skin.
