A Neapolitan Baroque-style ex-voto, in the form of a heart depicting breasts, this necklace preserves the memory of an object of offering and devotion.
Anatomical ex-votos such as this heart depicting breasts were more particularly addressed to the powers of health and healing. They were offered either in the hope of recovery or in gratitude for a grace received. Here, the body becomes a sign. Pain, vulnerability or expectation are given visible form, entrusted to the sacred.
In its Baroque form, the object thus unites fervour and embodiment. The heart, the symbolic seat of inner impulse, is here joined to the representation of the breast — an image of the living body, femininity, nourishment and primal dependence. The offering becomes at once prayer, protection and an act of trust.
What once belonged to the realm of offering now rests upon the skin.
