History
A Roman Baroque cross, this necklace preserves the force of Christianity’s central symbol.

Within it, the cross gathers a plurality of meanings: it refers to the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, Christ’s sacrifice and salvation. A historical instrument of suffering, it becomes in Christian thought the very sign of redemption, divine love, forgiveness and hope. It is at once the memory of an ordeal and the promise of a new life.

Its form, too, carries an essential reading. The vertical axis links heaven and earth, the divine and the soul; the horizontal axis inscribes the human condition within the sensible world. At their meeting point, the cross becomes a sign of union between the eternal and the temporal. Beyond Christianity, this structure has travelled across cultures as a symbol of balance, at times associated with the four cardinal points or the four elements.

What once belonged to the realm of faith, salvation and the balance of forces now rests upon the skin.
