A Florentine Baroque medallion painted in trompe-l’œil, depicting the Last Judgement, this necklace preserves the memory of an art founded on illusion, observation and virtuosity.
These works were known as pietre figurate, or “figured stones”. In the wake of this fascination with forms that nature itself seemed already to contain, artists began to imitate them, extending by the hand what the eye believed it could discern within the material.
Here, the trompe-l’œil gives form to an ultimate scene: the Last Judgement. The sacred image unfolds within a material worked as apparition, between nature, artifice and spiritual vision.
Transformed into a necklace, this Florentine Baroque medallion shifts that vision to the skin.
What once belonged to learned illusion and the sacred image now rests upon the body.
